This settlement lies in the foothills of the Alps, on the shore of Lake Fertő just seven kilometres from Sopron, 75 km from Vienna. The local alcali-hydrogen-carbonate- chloride-sulphur waters are efficacious in the treatment of chronic locomotor disorders, and as a drinking cure for gastroenteritis. Local spring water is also distributed in bottled form.
The compact but highly atmospheric spa town suffered extensive damage in the course of World War II, and it was only fully reconstructured in 1975. Excursions: - Fertőd, Esterházy Mansion (known as the Hungarian Versailles) - The famous Fertőrákos quarry, hosting opera and balett performances - Sopron, one of the most attractive towns in Hungary.
