This very special region is to be found in the westernmost part of the country. Its cool and rainy climate promoted the formation of woods and the ridge woods as well as the wet meadows in the valleys watered by crystal-clear streams, home of many protected animal and plant species. The settlement structure is characterised by the -szer-, a unit composed of 5-10 houses, a speciality not to be found in any other part of the country.
A long time ago, the szers were occupied by related families and the szers were frequently named after the family names of the occupants. After the Hungarian Conquest, the area was occupied by the so called march-guards; the name of the region Õrség (Guard) originates from these times.
